Not For Humans

Our Resources

Organisational Resources

AI is already inside your organisation. Governance often is not.

For-purpose organisations are adopting AI faster than their governance systems can keep up. Staff are experimenting. Managers are making judgement calls. Boards and executives are being asked to provide oversight in a space that is moving quickly, unevenly, and often without clear internal rules.

Not For Humans exists to help organisations work in the human layer of AI governance: the space where judgement, behaviour, accountability, culture, and service delivery decisions actually happen. Our resources help organisations move from informal AI use to shared language, clearer decisions, and human-owned accountability.

Where Not For Humans Works

Most governance effort lands in the wrong place.

Technical systems and operational processes receive the most attention. Human judgment and behaviour receive the least. Not For Humans was built to work in the space that everything else walks past.

80% of governance effort
is invested here
Technical capability — systems, models, platforms, automation
Operational set-up — policies, compliance, procurement
Organisational systems and processes

80% of problems

Human judgment and behaviour — how decisions are actually made
Culture and accountability — who owns what, and whether anyone checks
Service delivery decisions — where AI outputs meet real people

What Not For Humans addresses at the human layer

How AI changes the way decisions are made under pressure
What happens to judgment when AI outputs sound certain and authoritative
Where responsibility sits when multiple people are involved in an AI-assisted decision
The conditions that make scrutiny most likely to erode
When informal AI use becomes the new normal, and whether anyone notices
Whether lived experience and community knowledge still get heard when AI speaks first

“Not For Humans exists because I’m genuinely worried about who will bear the human costs of rapid AI adoption. I know it won’t be distributed fairly.”

Adrian Hubble, Founder, Not For Humans

The Governance Gap

The gap is not simply technical capability. The gap is human capability.

82%

of for-purpose organisations are already using AI tools. Only 10% have written governance policies in place.

Organisations need to be able to answer:

What are staff actually using AI for?

Where are decisions being shaped by AI outputs?

Who is checking whether those outputs are appropriate?

What happens when AI changes the speed, confidence, or scrutiny of a decision?

Who is accountable when multiple people are involved in an AI-assisted decision?

How are community voice, lived experience, and cultural knowledge protected?

These are not just technology questions. They are governance questions.

Australian Regulatory Context

The ACNC Governance Standards require registered charities to act in the best interests of the communities they serve. That obligation extends directly to how AI tools are adopted and governed within your organisation. Whole-of-organisation governance is not optional. It is a compliance matter.

How They Work Together

Two resources. Two levels of work.

Not For Humans resources are designed to support organisations across two connected levels. At the team level, people need shared language to name what is happening in everyday AI use. At the leadership level, organisations need structured reflection, deliberate decisions, and clear accountability. The Human Behaviour Cards build awareness and practice from the ground up. The Governance Toolkit converts that awareness into organisational commitments.

Who It’s For

Resources built for everyone in the organisation.

Boards and Executives

For leaders who need line-of-sight into how AI is being used, where risk is emerging, and what governance decisions need to be made.

Managers and Team Leaders

For people supporting staff who are already using AI tools in day-to-day work, often before formal policy or training has caught up.

Frontline Teams and Coordinators

For staff who need permission to pause, language to name what they are noticing, and clarity about when something should be escalated.

Governance, Risk, and People Leaders

For those responsible for translating high-level AI principles into real organisational practice.

Facilitators and OD Practitioners

For practitioners supporting leadership groups and teams to have structured, honest conversations about AI, behaviour, and accountability.

Why This Matters for Community Organisations

The risks are not evenly distributed.

For-purpose organisations serve communities that may be most exposed to the harms of poorly governed AI. AI can reshape access, assessment, service delivery, advocacy, communication, funding, employment, and public trust.

Communities already experiencing digital exclusion, structural inequality, discrimination, poverty, disability, racism, or service system complexity may carry the greatest burden when AI is adopted quickly and governed poorly.

That is why Not For Humans focuses on the organisations closest to community impact. AI governance in this sector cannot only be about efficiency. It must also be about care, scrutiny, equity, and human responsibility.

Global Context

UNDP research finds that jobs held by women are nearly twice as exposed to AI-driven automation, and rural and indigenous communities often remain invisible in the datasets that train AI systems. The organisations serving these communities are the least equipped to respond.

UNDP Next Great Divergence Report 2025 ↗

First Nations Communities and AI

Australia’s first comprehensive report on AI and First Nations communities finds that digital exclusion, algorithmic bias, and data extraction could widen existing inequality. AI offers genuine potential when guided by cultural authority, data sovereignty, and community control.

Where to Start

Start where AI is already showing up.

If you are new to Not For Humans, start with the Human Behaviour Cards. They are available now, designed for immediate use, and help teams begin building the shared language needed for better AI governance.

The Governance Toolkit is in development and will provide a more structured whole-of-organisation process for leadership groups. You do not need to wait for the Toolkit to begin.

Start where AI is already showing up: in everyday decisions, team conversations, and the human behaviours shaping how work gets done.

Facilitator Resources

Looking for a facilitator?

Both Not For Humans resources are designed for self-facilitation. However, some organisations may benefit from skilled external facilitation, particularly when working with leadership groups or navigating sensitive governance questions.

Not For Humans is currently developing a facilitator pathway for practitioners who want to support this work.
